Key environmental features: Waterberg wilderness reserve is located in the Waterberg region of the country. The farm is dominated by Acocks veld type no. 20: Sour Bushveld. This veld type dominates the Waterberg region, and is characterized by the presence of tall straight Birchwood trees (Faurea saligna) and tall, tufted sour grassveld, in an open savannah environment. Other dominant woody species include: Protea, Acacia, Combretum and Rhus. The altitude range for this vegetation type is 1 200- 1500 m above sea level, and the average annual rainfall range is between 650 and 900 mm. Bordering the sour bushveld vegetation  close to the WWC boundaries are two other Acocks veld types: No. 18. Mixed Bushveld & No. 12. Springbok flats turf thornveld. The WWC environment is distinguished by undulating hills and gorges that feed the Sterk River. There are 4 of these large gorges/kloofs of which 2 at least retain water perennially (if not flow through-out the year). Plants that dominate these kloof areas are Mimosops, Grewia and Ficus species.

The Water berg Wilderness reserve is home to a large number of animal species as well as over 250 bird species and ideal habitat for a very large number of reptile species. The African rock Python and Black Mamba, two sought after species for reptile enthusiasts are common to the area. The wooded gorges and rugged terrain make the ideal habitat for a number of species including Leopard and Brown Hyena both of which frequent the area on a regular basis.

Game viewing is good as large numbers do occur on the property and the mountainous terrain offers the chance to see some species like Mountain Reedbuck and Klipspringer which are rarely sighted in many other reserves. See full larger mammal list below.
